Turning Struggles into Strength: Lisa Gotch's Journey

In life, challenges often present themselves at various stages, and for some, the struggles of their 20s stand out as particularly formidable. One individual who weathered these storms is Lisa Gotch, now 56, who reflects on her journey halfway through her 40s, recognizing her newfound resilience.

At 28, Lisa faced uncertainties, having graduated college without a clear career path. Financial and emotional dependency on her parents persisted, and her journey through therapy unveiled the extent of her emotional immaturity and mental health struggles. Despite the difficulties, Lisa acknowledges that these challenges played a crucial role in shaping the person she is today.

Diagnosis and proper medication became a turning point for Lisa. In hindsight, she remembers gaining the mental clarity needed to navigate life and discover joy. This newfound empowerment fueled her creativity, leading to the establishment of her company, ban.do, in 2008.

Derived from the French word "bandeau," meaning "headband," ban.do initially gained recognition for its flower headbands, notably worn by Taylor Swift. Over the years, the company expanded its offerings to include a diverse range of feel-good merchandise, from polka-dot jumpsuits to heart-shaped pool floats and uplifting slogan notebooks.

Among ban.do's products close to Lisa's heart are cursive nameplate necklaces featuring the words "anxiety," "depression," and "bipolar." Notably, 100 percent of the proceeds from these items contribute to the charity Bring Change to Mind.

Lisa Gotch attributes much of her success to the transformative power of her mental health journey. Her story is a reminder that challenges, when faced with creativity, and embracing one's challenges, can pave the way for personal growth and achievement. Lisa's entrepreneurial journey serves as an inspiring example of turning struggles into strengths.

CREAM OF CAULIFLOWER SOUP RECIPE

đź‘Ť Live Well Now Approved | Low Calorie

You Will Need:

2 pounds cauliflower, cut into bite-size florets

2 large carrots, peeled, trimmed and cut into 3-inch pieces

½ medium yellow onion, quartered

3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

2 tablespoons nutritional yeast

2 teaspoons kosher salt

½ teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper, plus more for serving

4 small cloves garlic

4 cups chicken or vegetable stock

1 cup whole milk

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

â…› teaspoon ground nutmeg

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 375°F with a rack in the center position. Line a rimmed sheet pan with parchment paper.

2. Arrange cauliflower, carrots, and onion on the sheet pan and toss with 1 tablespoon of the olive oil, nutritional yeast, 1 teaspoon of the salt, and the pepper. Place the garlic and remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a small ramekin, then add it to the center of the sheet pan. Roast for 45 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender and deep golden brown.

3. Reserve 6 of the roasted cauliflower florets, then transfer the remaining vegetables to the base of a blender. Using a fork, transfer the roasted garlic to the blender, reserving the oil in the ramekin. Add the stock, milk, lemon juice, nutmeg, and remaining 1 teaspoon of salt to the blender and blend until smooth, about 2 minutes. Transfer the mixture to a medium pot and bring to a simmer over medium heat.

4. Divide the soup between 6 bowls. Garnish with the reserved cauliflower, a drizzle of the reserved garlic oil, and as much pepper as you like. Serve.
