Redefining Microbiology: The Inspiring Story of Rita R. Colwell

In 2008, Rita R. Colwell, then 73 years old, started a new venture by founding CosmosID, a pioneering company dedicated to developing technology for analyzing microbiomes, the microscopic organisms that play a crucial role in our health and environment.

Today, Dr. Colwell holds the position of chair on the company's board while also balancing her roles as an educator at the University of Maryland at College Park and the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health.

With a distinguished career as a microbiologist, Dr. Colwell's contributions have been widely recognized, earning her an impressive 63 honorary degrees throughout her lifetime. Notably, in 2006, she was awarded the National Medal of Science by President George W. Bush for her outstanding achievements in the field.

Dr. Colwell made history as the first female director of the National Science Foundation, serving from 1998 to 2004, and later assumed the role of chief scientist at Canon U.S. Life Sciences, demonstrating her exceptional leadership and expertise in various scientific domains.

Dr. Colwell's trailblazing career serves as a reminder that with dedication and perseverance, women can overcome any obstacle and leave an indelible mark on their respective fields.
