Linda Fagan: A Historic Helm at the U.S. Coast Guard

On June 1, 2022, history was made as Linda Fagan, at the age of 58, shattered one of the last remaining military glass ceilings, taking the oath as the commandant of the United States Coast Guard. In doing so, she achieved the remarkable feat of becoming the first female service chief in the storied history of the U.S. Armed Forces.

As commandant, Fagan shoulders the responsibility of overseeing a vast force, commanding 42,000 active-duty, 7,000 reserve, and 8,700 civilian personnel. In addition, she guides the efforts of 21,000 Coast Guard Auxiliary volunteers, managing an operating annual budget that exceeds $13 billion.

Before assuming the role of commandant, Fagan served as the Coast Guard's 32nd vice commandant, earning the distinction of being the branch's first female four-star admiral. Her journey began in 1985 when she graduated from the Coast Guard Academy, a mere 12 years after women were first granted the opportunity to serve alongside their male counterparts.

Fagan's illustrious career has taken her to every corner of the globe, starting with her initial posting on an icebreaker in Antarctica. Since then, she has served on all seven continents, demonstrating unparalleled dedication and leadership throughout her distinguished tenure in the U.S. Coast Guard. Linda Fagan's historic ascent to the helm not only signifies personal accomplishment but also symbolizes a landmark achievement for women in the U.S. military.
