On This Day In Women’s History:

December 13, 1903: Ella Baker was born.

Ella Baker, organizer, tried to develop local leaders for civil rights campaigns but found male leaders in the NAACP quite unwilling to delegate power, helped lead the Southern Christian Leadership Conference until Dr. King took over, and worked with the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party.

đź’Ş Joy Harjo: Poetic Visionary and Cultural Champion

Joy Harjo, a revered performer and writer, assumed the role of the 23rd Poet Laureate of the United States at age 68, serving three impactful terms from 2019 to 2022.

During her tenure, Harjo initiated the innovative project "Living Nations, Living Words." This digital mapping endeavor celebrated contemporary Native poets, emphasizing the significance of place. Now archived in the Library of Congress, it immortalizes Indigenous voices for posterity.

Harjo's literary prowess earned her the Leadership Award from the Academy of American Poets, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Book Critics Circle in 2022, and Yale's esteemed 2023 Bollingen Prize for American Poetry.

In 2022, Harjo showcased her versatility by releasing a book of prose, a poetry collection, and a captivating children's book. She also contributed to "We Are America," an experimental anthem fusing sounds from diverse corners of the country.

While rooted in poetry, Harjo's diverse pursuits—from screenwriting to teaching and performing with the saxophone—underscore her multifaceted creative journey.

Joy Harjo's enduring legacy as an advocate for Native voices and her boundless artistic exploration serves as an inspiration, transcending artistic boundaries and fostering cultural appreciation. I hope today’s newsletter inspires you as much as it inspires me.
