October 10, 1888: Dorothy Ferebee was born.

Dorothy Ferebee finally gained a medical internship at Freedman’s Hospital despite rampant sexism, then built a 47-year association with Howard University Hospital and the District of Columbia.

BROCCOLI SALAD WITH BACON

You Will Need:

½ cup mayonnaise

1 tablespoon whole-grain mustard

1 tablespoon cider vinegar

1 small clove garlic, grated

1 teaspoon sugar

¼ teaspoon ground pepper

4 cups finely chopped broccoli crowns

1 cup finely chopped cauliflower

¼ cup finely chopped red onion

3 slices cooked bacon, chopped (1/4 cup)

3 tablespoons sunflower seeds, toasted

Directions:

1. Whisk mayonnaise, mustard, vinegar, garlic, sugar and pepper in a large bowl. Add broccoli, cauliflower, onion, bacon and sunflower seeds. Stir to coat.

To make ahead: Refrigerate for up to 1 day.

Cook Time: 20mins | Servings: 5

🎸 Grandma Mary: The Guitar Goddess Who Defied Age

Today in my favorite section of the newsletter, I am bringing you a story of Mary Ho.

Mary Ho, a 73-year-old grandmother in Singapore, is often known as Grandma Mary or the "coolest grandma" thanks to her impressive journey into the world of music.

At the age of 60, Mary began learning to play the acoustic guitar, starting as a casual hobby. Over time, her passion for the guitar grew, leading her to master electric lead guitar solos.

After years of hard work and dedication, she built an extensive repertoire, some of which she performed at public events.

Mary draws inspiration from legendary guitarists like Carlos Santana and BB King, and her family and friends provide her with the support to continue her musical journey. In addition to playing the guitar, Mary is also skilled in dancing, and playing the electone, drums, and harmonica. She has a love for drama and traveling.

Mary has graced various public events with her musical talents, including an appearance on the premiere TV talk show "Rouge," produced by MediaCorp Singapore, in March 2008.

As a devoted grandmother of seven, Mary uses her musical talents to perform for charity, and she serves as an inspiration for her grandchildren, encouraging them to explore and learn musical instruments such as the guitar, piano, violin, and drums.
