Grace Young: Advocate for Chinatowns and Culinary Traditions

Grace Young, a stalwart in preserving Chinese cuisine, took an unexpected turn in her sixties, becoming a fierce advocate for Chinatowns' survival during trying times.

Amidst the pandemic's impact, Young rallied support by documenting events and initiating a fund that raised over $40,000 for Manhattan's Chinatown. Collaborating with the James Beard Foundation, her #SaveChineseRestaurants campaign spotlighted local eateries, garnering support and exposure.

At 66, Young's advocacy earned her two prestigious culinary awards in 2022: the Julia Child Award and the James Beard Humanitarian of the Year award, honoring her tireless efforts.

Her culinary journey started in college, leading to positions at General Foods and a significant stint at Time-Life Cookbooks, where she contributed to over 40 cookbooks as the test kitchen head.

Grace Young's unwavering commitment to preserving Chinese culinary heritage and her impactful advocacy for our power to impact change for things we are passionate about and believe in.

BROWN BUTTER SAGE CAULIFLOWER GNOCCHI

👍 Live Well Now Approved | Vegetarian

You Will Need:

1 stick salted butter

1/4 cup fresh sage

1 lb cubed butternut squash

1 package Trader Joe's cauliflower gnocchi

Directions:

1. In a medium sized skillet melt butter over medium heat. As the butter melts, it will begin to foam. The color will slowly turn from a pale yellow to lightly golden and to finally, a toasted brown. Once the butter smells slightly nutty it’s ready for the butternut squash.

2. Reduce the heat to medium/low and add in the butternut squash stirring often. Cook until squash is soft enough to be pierced with a fork. Increase heat to medium high and add the fresh sage along with the gnocchi, cooking until the gnocchi begins to brown, about 4-5 minutes.
