🪸 Embracing Change: Hilary Kingsley's Journey from Journalism to Law at 60

When searching for stories of remarkable women to share with you, I often encounter narratives of record-breaking athletic achievements or remarkable entrepreneurial successes. While these stories are undeniably inspiring, I also believe in highlighting the equally motivational tales that may not appear as grandiose at first glance. Among them, I strive to uncover stories of women who have faced hardships and embraced life-altering transformations in their later years. My mission is to discover and share them with you. Today, I am excited to introduce you to Hilary Kingsley.

After a distinguished 40-year career in Fleet Street journalism, Hilary embarked on a remarkable journey, deciding to shift gears and pursue a new career as a lawyer at the age of 60. For a decade, she delved into the legal world, specializing in media law.

Her trajectory from journalism to law was a momentous decision sparked by an unexpected realization. While perusing her daughter's legal textbooks, Hilary was struck by the idea that she could embark on a new path.

Studying law at 60 was invigorating for Hilary, who embraced the student life despite being surrounded by classmates decades younger. Supported by her family, especially her daughter, she navigated the challenges of studying law, a subject unfamiliar yet intriguing. With determination, she earned her qualifications and seamlessly fused her journalism expertise into her new legal career, specializing in media law.

Transitioning into the legal profession presented hurdles, especially in securing employment. Hilary faced the reluctance of employers to take a chance on someone in their sixties. Despite initial challenges and numerous job applications, she eventually secured a training contract through sheer perseverance, landing a role at the Daily Mail, a testament to her resilience and determination.

Reflecting on her journey, Hilary encourages those considering a career shift later in life to thoroughly research their desired field. She advises not to be dissuaded by age-related biases and to leverage the resilience and understanding that comes with maturity.

Have a wonderful weekend. ,
