January 2, 1895: Sadie Alexander was born.

Cynthia Chavez Lamar: Leading Smithsonian's Historic Milestone

In a historic move, Cynthia Chavez Lamar made waves in 2022 as the first Native American woman to helm a Smithsonian Institution museum. At 51, she assumed directorship at the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI), marking an extraordinary achievement.

Chavez Lamar oversees NMAI's vast collection, encompassing 1 million objects, photos, and 500,000 films and digital media, honoring the diverse cultures of Native nations.

Hailing from Katishtya, the Pueblo of San Felipe in New Mexico, she earned her doctorate in American studies from the University of New Mexico before starting her career with an internship at NMAI.

Cynthia Chavez Lamar's ascendancy as the director of NMAI not only signifies a personal milestone but also represents a historic landmark within the Smithsonian network. Her leadership is poised to shape a transformative chapter, solidifying the museum's dedication to honoring and perpetuating the profound legacies of Native American communities for generations to come.
