Architectural Achievements: Deborah Berke's Remarkable Career

In 2016, at the age of 62, Deborah Berke made history as the first female dean of the Yale School of Architecture, a role she embraced with passion and dedication after years as an adjunct professor at the institution since 1988.

As one of the earliest women to enter the field of architecture, Berke paved the way for countless others when she founded her New York City-based architectural design firm, originally named Deborah Berke Partners and now known as TenBerke, in 1982.

TenBerke's portfolio boasts an impressive array of projects, including collaborations with esteemed institutions like the University of Pennsylvania, The New School, and the University of Washington in Seattle, showcasing Berke's innovative approach and commitment to excellence.

Throughout her illustrious career, Berke has received numerous accolades and honors, recognizing her outstanding contributions to the field. At the age of 51, she was bestowed with an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from her alma mater, the Rhode Island School of Design, and in 2012, she made history as the inaugural laureate of the Berkeley-Rupp Architecture Professorship and Prize.

In 2022, Berke's legacy was further cemented when she was inducted into the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Letters and received the AIA/ACSA Topaz Medallion, the highest honor in architectural education, underscoring her enduring impact and influence in shaping the architectural landscape.

Deborah Berke's remarkable journey serves as an inspiration to women everywhere, demonstrating that with passion, perseverance, and dedication, they too can break barriers and make their mark in traditionally male-dominated fields.

ROASTED CABBAGE SALAD WITH LEMON-GARLIC VINAIGRETTE RECIPE

👍 Live Well Now Approved | Plant-Based

You Will Need:

1 medium head cabbage

½ tsp salt, divided

¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil

1 ½ tablespoons red-wine vinegar

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 1/2 teaspoons Dijon mustard

1 small clove garlic, grated

Ground pepper to taste

2 tablespoons sliced almonds, toasted (see Tip)

2 tablespoons minced fresh chives or parsley

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with foil, parchment paper or a silicone baking mat; coat lightly with olive oil cooking spray.

2. Remove any damaged outer leaves from cabbage and cut into 8 wedges, keeping the core intact to hold them together. Arrange the wedges on the prepared pan. Coat the tops of the wedges lightly with cooking spray and season with ¼ teaspoon salt and pepper to taste.

3. Roast the cabbage, rotating the pan from back to front and flipping the wedges halfway, until tender and golden, 30 to 40 minutes.

4. Meanwhile, combine oil, vinegar, lemon juice, mustard, garlic, the remaining ¼ teaspoon salt and pepper to taste in a jar with a tight-fitting lid. Cover and shake until well blended.

5. Let the cabbage cool for 5 minutes, then coarsely chop. Transfer to a shallow serving dish and drizzle with the dressing. Sprinkle with almonds and chives (or parsley) before serving.
